So is there a "next step" for The Shanty?

What's the word? What's the goal? What's the role that a positive cash flow would play? Is anybody even still thinking about this?

Comments, please.

  1. So the Shanty is showing a (hypothetical) positive cash flow, huh? Who woulda thunk? After going over some of the comments made to Scott's pot boiler, I'm impressed. It's pretty cool to see you guys get excited about it.

To be perfectly honest, I've been excited about taking The Shanty to the next step for some time. We're operating at a bare bones level here, folks. With the addition of a few key re$ources, The Shanty could be a real utopian utility.

Problem is, I'm not exactly sure we're all on the same page. There are some pretty big issues to think about about. Like, what is the "next step?" Does it involve a bigger audience? I mean, so far we've been Shanty-ing things for a pretty small and familiar group. I think that's one of the greatest features of The Shanty. Would a larger reader base require a change in tone?

Does the "next step" involve more effort from everyone? If we're looking to grab a bigger audience, do we need to up the output, both in quality and quantity? Are we prepared for that? So far The Shanty's been a pretty casual engagement. Put in as much as you want to. No more, no less. Does that have to change?

Or should be we just wing it? Let The Shanty grow as naturally as it has been? What happens, happens. It's a drum circle, bro.

  2. "In this business you're either growing or dying. There ain't no third direction."

I say grow. I don't think expansion of viewership and the addition of advertisements will affect our ability to find, post, and discuss the music, movies, ideas, etc. that interest us. Let's face it - copying and pasting links doesn't exactly qualify us for a degree of "artistic integrity" that could be "undermined" by a fancy backdrop and ads for boner pills. Thoughts?

  3. Also, in terms of "upping the output, both in quality and quantity" - we have a talented Graphic Designer at our disposal (i.e. Jimmy Burhman Jr.) that could help spruce up the interface and overall layout if you're open to that. Last I checked with Jim he was up to the task but I'll let him speak for himself.

  4. i say fuck yea. With one caveat. The money that this generates is used to purchase festival tickets to the festival each summer (or show in the winter that'd be epic) that the majority of us can attend as a reunion
