From The Best of the Best of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader - Behind the Hits

The Artist: Nivana

The Song: "Smells like Teen Spirit" (1991)

The Story: Before Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain fell for Courtney Love, he dated drummer Tobi Vail in 1991. But she eventually broke it off. One night, one of Vail's bandmates, Kathleen Hanna, was hanging out at Cobain's apartment, listening to him lament the break-up. At some point she grabbed a can of spray pain and scrawled the words, "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit" on Cobain's wall. (Teen Spirit was a deodorant that Vail wore, and her scent was still lingering on Cobain.) The phrase immediately struck him and provided the inspiration for what he later called "the ultimate pop song." "Smells Like Teen Spirit" became the first big hit from Nirvana's seminal album, Nevermind. It reached #6 on the Billboard charts and has since been called the anthem of a generation.

Ironically, Cobain later admitted that he didn't know that Teen Spirit was a deodorant until after the song released -- he would have never knowingly put the name of a mass-produced product for teenagers into the title of one of his song.

Greetings wodes- 90's recap!

Hey wodes! Young rustic and I decided to put together a little trip down memory lane through the 90's. We couldn't possibly capture the entire decade in one playlist, but I think there are some good ones on here. I know you all remember the Sabatoge video, a retro-cop themed chase through urban terrain. Teen spirit-- teenage 'my life sucks' attitude, No excuses- a 98.3 KFMZ favorite. Many a grithun were smoked listening to Mouthful of Cavities. Ah... the good old days. enjoy!!

De Jonsi Vu

Ok, so maybe not. Maybe there isn't any quivering falsetto, or any bowstring tickled guitar. But dammit, this is for me what characterized the peak of my Sigur Rós obsession. Though I'm sure most of us have come across this song at some point in the last six years, I don't think it would hurt at all to take the next eight minutes to revisit.

I went running yesterday, and for fun set the iPod to a Sigur Rós shuffle. Not to echo any patented Schmitt hyperbole, but if I could have bottled my experience in a sports drink, it could have gotten Manderrunning (not to digress, but let's all take a moment to picture that, gloves, hat, and all). By about three minutes in, I was wearing a grin that could barely contain the "...fuck yeah". Know what I mean, Mandergrin?

New Music From Jonsi - Free MP3 Download

Happy New Year Shantiers! Looks like everyone had a nice vacation from work, school, and posting kickass new music. Well, snap out of it. I heard the latest from Jonsi (of Sigur Ros fame) this morning on my way to work, and I think it's just what we need to get back in the saddle. Obviously you'll hear the similarities between the band and the solo project, but as you'll soon find out, that's a good thing. You can download the first single off the upcoming album for free at Jonsi's website ( if you enter your email address.
