Happy Birthday to the LP!

In case you guys needed a reason to celebrate today, besides it being the Summer Solstice (longest day of Summer, fuck yea!), today is also the birthday of the long playing (or LP) record format. On this day in 1945, Columbia records released two albums simultaneously, which were the first 10 inch and 12 inch LPs released. Those two albums (respectively) were a reissue of Frank Sinatra's "The Voice of Frank Sinatra" and Mendelssohn Concerto in E Minor for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 64. Well, technically LPs were introduced by Columbia two days earlier at a press conference, and I suppose RCA should really get credit for releasing them way earlier in 1931. However, since RCA chose to release them right before the Great Depression, initial sales naturally suffered and they were pulled off the market two years later.

In honor of the occasion, Wired has posted on some of the best album covers of all time. I thought I'd share some of my favorites with you.

Of course.
First album ever.
Bitch is hot.

Is it just me, or does this thing look like it moves?

That's it for me. Did I forget anything?

Platte River Rain

This is for all the STLers that haven't been able to get a Cello Dave fix in a while. Paul and I went down to the Holland Lawn last Friday to check out Platte River Rain. Pretty darn good.

You can buy the album on iTunes, or if you come up to Omaha for CWS, I'll get ya a copy. (You see what I did there? You need to come to Omaha, and then it's free. So come.)

Watch your mouth

"False friends" are two words, from two different languages, that sound the same but mean different things. For those of you going abroad (particularly Turkey, Iran or Swaziland), it's important that you pay particular attention to these types of words. Here are some examples:

Lawman (Surinam): Lunatic
Sky (Norway): Cloud
Alone (Italy) Halo
Bless (Iceland): Good-bye
Fart (Turkey): Exaggerating
Bog (Russia): God
Turd (Iran): Fragile
Chew (Ethiopia): Salt
Babe (Swaziland): Priest
Made (Netherland): Maggot
Pasta (Portugal): Briefcase

Eclipse Soundtrack

Much like the second, the third installment of the Twilight series has a pretty good soundtrack. Again, some big names and decent songs here. And again, this is the full tracklist, so I don't necessarily stand by every song. And again, direct all inqueries related to the movie's release date, cast, plot line, etc. to Rusty.

Yup, still posting. How's it going, Jason?
