Madaila - International Lover

Today's a day for a recommendation from my better half. Mon had managed to sneak the studio cut for this little diddy into a few car rides before I started seeking it out for myself. Lo and behold I came across this live cut that shows some jam-tastic promise.

For those interested, I also recommend their most recent release, "Where Do We Go From Here?", if only for its tease of what could be another awesome session. For those looking for the live experience, I'm sorry to find that the band appears to be on indefinite hiatus.

In case anyone was doing some early Christmas shopping

“Let us share some thoughts, feelings, and meditate on life using the vehicle of universal music. Music is food for the soul. I hope each of us finds something special in this short journey together.”

michelle asked me last night my favorite song of all times and why...

I had an easy think about it and thought to share with you guys what i told her:

1) set the controls for the heart of the sun. i must have watched live at pompeii a couple thousand times. this track always haunts me and this line in particular: "witness the man who raved at the wall as he wrote his questions to heaven". when waters and mason bring break in at 7:05 still causes shivers - quite possibly my favorite chord progression of all.

2) 3. because this is the first song i heard after marrying michelle. i don't need to hear this in the afterlife because that day was heaven.

3) baraka. damn beautiful music. despite the rampant drug use associated with the sound tribe, sector 9 does a magnificent job removing restrictions to that place you need to go for music.

4) #6.  I listen to this quite often on the train into work avec lac leman et mont blanc devant moi. Being visually surrounded by such natural beauty and this flowing through the ear buds reminds me that there is a lot more to life then trying to fetch that all mighty franc.

5) mouna bowa. a song for all seasons. you need to kick your shoes off and dance? check. you need a song for sunday brunch party? check. you need a song to help the screaming kids in the backseat calm down with? check.

Carini - Welcome Back

From Phish.net: "It is difficult to imagine any other Phish song accumulating as much hype and lore in so short a time as has “Carini.” It had a big rookie season back in 1.0, eventually entered the rotation as a consistent first-set shredder, and then in 3.0 emerged as a dependable jam monster."

It continues: "At a time in Phish’s history when Type II jams in unexpected places were very hard to come by, [its breakout performance opening the second set in Worcester on 6/7/12] was a very welcome development indeed. Other standout versions emerged, and by 2013 (particularly in the fall), “Carini” was arguably the most dependable jam vehicle in the toolbox, spawning several very different but very satisfying excursions."

I only bring this up because A) I feel like I'm discovering this song for the first time. It starts off so weird, and probably so off-putting to so many people. And I always want more. Can't get away from it. And B) it's story kind of mimics my view of the band right now. So much history and so much lore. So many dependable, different, and satisfying excursions.

No relation to what I hope is a 3.0 emergence of The Shanty Blog. Not sure why you're even thinking that. No lore, hype, or welcome developments here;) Don't leave me hanging here guys...
